Understanding Matcha: Craft, Flavor, and Enjoyment
Why “Uji”?
Crafted in Uji by a venerable tea house with more than 150 years of history, this authentic matcha embodies the elegance of Kyoto’s tea tradition.
Matcha is a finely ground Japanese green tea made from young leaves that are shaded before harvest, enhancing chlorophyll and amino acids for a vibrant green color and rich umami flavor. The leaves are steamed, dried, refined, and slowly ground into powder. Because matcha is fully consumed rather than steeped, it offers a deep, layered taste with gentle bitterness balanced by natural sweetness. It is traditionally whisked with hot water to create a smooth, aromatic tea, and can also be enjoyed as a creamy latte with milk and sugar.
“For over eight centuries, Uji in Kyoto has been renowned for producing Japan’s finest tea. Enjoy its rich, elegant flavor in the comfort of your home.”
Uji is one of Japan’s oldest and most esteemed matcha-producing regions, with a history spanning over eight centuries. It is a birthplace of tea culture where renowned tea masters, including Sen no Riky? who completed “wabi” tea ritual, helped shape the philosophy and aesthetics of the Japanese tea ceremony. Uji is also the origin of shaded cultivation, a technique essential to producing high-quality matcha. This unique method yields tea leaves with a vivid deep-green color, pronounced sweetness, rich umami, and a refined, clean finish.
The region’s natural environment?its fertile soil, mist-covered fields, and sharp temperature shifts between day and night?further enhances the color, aroma, and flavor that define exceptional matcha. Moreover, the names “Kyoto” and “Uji” carry strong global prestige, and Uji matcha has long been cherished by major schools of tea ceremony, solidifying its status as one of Japan’s most respected and authentic matcha origins.
