The Bird of Paradise CO-OP Journey

The CESMACH farming cooperative cultivates organic, fair trade coffee in the buffer zone of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. In addition to using only organic and sustainable farming practices, the co-op is also involved in environmental protection and social development projects that benefit the local ecosystem and their community. Through the Sustainable Coffee Project, farmers are increasing shade and crop biodiversity by planting new coffee trees alongside citrus and other fruit-bearing trees. Through The Women’s Project, women farmers and wives of farmers are able to learn skills in leadership development and co-operative management.

Las Colinas is an organic and fair trade coffee farming cooperative located in the buffer zone of El Imposible National Park. This 89 member farmer co-op is run collectively, so all members share in the responsibilities and profits from their 200 hectares of land. This unique organizational structure allows for each member to take on different specialties, from field hand to commercial director. Their use of organic growing practices and implementation of a low-water use coffee depulper ensure that their impacts on this fragile ecosystem remain low.

The CECOVASA co-op is located in the Puno and Cusco regions of Peru. Here, a third of all coffee production occurs in the buffer zone of the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park. While farmers in this region only have an average of 2 hectares of land, they’re known for their cultivation of high altitude and award winning coffee. Certified organic and fair trade, in the past the CECOVASA co-op has used their fair trade premiums to provide scholarships for school children, build out a coffee quality lab, invest in reforestation programs, and have created the Committee for the Development of Women, providing professional training for women in animal husbandry, leadership, and first aid.
