Enhanced Infrastructure
In 1912, when the tea industry was predominantly British, PC Chatterjee founded Luxmi Tea as an Indian movement for self reliance.
At the time, tea making was characteristically British ? sola toupees, burra sahebs and sundowners. Luxmi was born out of PC Chatterjee’s quest to make Indian tea a tool in the Satyagraha movement and to break the British monopoly.
With a tract of land in Tripura to his name, he began to cultivate tea independently, without management agencies or advisors from London. Little did he know the extraordinary legacy that he would create and set into motion with Luxmi.
Other members of the Indian freedom movement - Assamese and Bengali students who also rebelled against British rule, joined his company, then called Indian Tea and Provisions. What started as an expression of freedom from the British Raj has now come to stand for the freedom of spirit.
The produce of this Victorian-era estate in Assam is blended with aromatic Indian spices to form a fusion of traditions. A bright brisk liquor with the typical body of Assam tea and distinct taste notes of pepper, ginger and cinnamon.
The blend is an ode to the humble ginger and long conversations savoured over endless cups of tea. Addabarie has two different folk legends that throw light on its unusual name. The first traces back to wild ginger or 'adda' that once grew in abundance in the gardens. The second - that a river running through the estate was a popular gathering spot, or ‘adda’ for country boats. Either way, whether ginger or a gathering - tea is its perfect accompaniment.
Upgrading technology and machinery at the factories, under Luxmi's stewardship, have afforded more output to the estates. With a total workforce of 12000+ workers, Luxmi’s North Bank estates produce over 6 million kgs of tea.
With generations of experience honing her intuition to pluck the right two leaves and a bud . To encourage this capacity, we support all her health and aspirations.
While her mission is to locate the finest polyphenol rich succulent leaf, ours is really just to see that her health and aspirations are met, such as good schooling for her children, basic housing, and healthcare for her family. The Jorashor river flows through the verdant fields of Addabarie, which lie a few kilometres south of Tezpur town. Legend has it that the estate derived its name from the ‘adda’ or wild ginger that grew in abundance on a patch of the estate. It is also said that a section of the estate was once a ‘bheel’, filled with the waters of the river Jia Bhorelli. Country boats would assemble under the shade of a huge ‘Shyam Kathal’ tree at the site and the gathering or ‘adda’ gave rise to the name Addabarie. The tree was believed to house evil spirits and a Maulvi Sahab was engaged to exorcise these beings.
A fifty five bed hospital at the garden serves the Addabarie gardens workforce with care.
It also treats the inhabitants of the neighboring villages, who may not have the means to afford expert medical treatment, free of cost. With better vernacular signage for policies, clearly demarcated buffer zones, better waste management systems and pollution control, the estate and its community share their commitment to maintaining a natural and inclusive way of living.
